Rapid Weight Loss- Via Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) - Rapid weight loss via WLS is an effective method for individuals that are obese to remove excessive weight. WLS is using only indicated if the individual has a body mass index of more than 40 and require a rapid weight loss of 80 to 100 pounds. Individuals that have less than this amount of weight to lose will not be appropriate candidates for WLS. Weight loss surgery may seem like the simple and easy answer to rapid weight loss for the unhealthily obese person, but there is still a lot of work for the individuals to do. After WLS patients will be required to stick to a fairly regulated diet with an emphasis on portion control. In addition there will be a gradually increasing exercise program to help with muscle development and production of lean body mass. There are several different kinds of WLS available, and as advertising in magazines and on the TV becomes more popular the public is gradually becoming aware of various options for WLS. Gastric bypass Just as the name suggests this type of WLS involves actually changing the routing of the food through the digestive system. The food bypasses certain parts of the upper digestive tract to avoid absorption of the food. This often leads to rapid weight loss but does require constant supervision by a doctor to prevent any nutritional issues or deficiencies. Gastroplasty Gastroplasty involves the same basic procedure as the gastric bypass, but it actually involves the decrease in the size of the stomach. In this way both the upper digestion is rerouted as well as the amount of food that can be contained in the stomach is directly decreased. Stomach stapling This WLS involves the surgeon actually making a small pouch at the top of the stomach right under the esophageal opening. This smaller stomach is then “stapled” or restricted with a saline filled band to give the patient a feeling of being full very quickly. The patient then needs to adjust their eating habits and monitor their food intake. Carnie Wilson is one of the most famous individuals that has used stomach stapling as a WLS option. Lap-Bands The full term for this surgery is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure. This procedure involves small surgical incisions being made in the upper abdominal area and a small, hollow sylastic band is placed around the top of the stomach to form a pouch. This pouch holds only about 2 ounces of food initially, and the doctor is able to add saline solution to the hollow band if the pouch area begins to expand. This is done through a small tube that in implanted at the time of the surgery. The end of the tube is attached to the abdominal muscles just below the ribs. Lap-bands are completely reversible, unlike the other procedures. Most patients have reported great success with the lap-band procedure. Of course diet, portion control and exercise are key to overall success and long-term weight loss. With any of these methods above, it is possible to lose well in excess of 100 pounds in a very short time, even if you are an easy gainer that cannot lose weight no matter how you try. In fact, if that's you, you are a perfect candidate.
