Obesity

A fat life sucks!

No matter how much you try to ignore the facts, life as an overweight or obese person is difficult from many aspects. Lets look at what an average day for someone like me looks like and compare notes - you may relate to what I have to say:

Morning

As you wake up in the morning you roll over to look at the clock, and are amazed at how exhausted you feel. This is largely due to the interruptions in breathing or sleep apnea that you have experienced all through the night. This has kept you from getting the restful sleep you need to be mentally able to face the day.

As you get out of bed and go the bathroom you pass the mirror, and avert your eyes so you don’t have to look. In the bathroom you prepare to get into the shower, and slowly get into the tub to prevent any slipping. Since you have gained weight you seem to be less stable, and are afraid if you are to slip and fall you may really hurt yourself or may not be able to get up.

After showering you again return to the room to dress, carefully avoiding the mirror again. As you choose your clothes you pick the biggest, and most covering dress, shirt or pants that you own. You avoid looking over at your “skinny” clothes as this just makes you feel bad.

You can't put it off any longer, you've got to look in the mirror to do your hair. Nothings changed, you're still fat and u..... (don't say it man, be kind to yourself for pete's sake!)

You head down to breakfast, but start to feel guilty so decide to skip this meal. You know that you should eat, but you feel horrible eating anything because you've come to equate eating with getting fatter.

Work

At work you avoid making eye contact with anyone, and just try to get to your desk as quickly as possible. You overhear others talking about going out for dinner, new clothes they have purchased or things they have done. These conversations make you feel horrible and isolated so you avoid them as much as possible.

At lunch a co-worker asks you if you want to go out and eat with the staff. Because it is hard for you to feel comfortable eating in public you make an excuse, and just grab something from the machine in the hall. You know that you shouldn’t be eating that sandwich or candy bar, but you are so hungry you just have to have something.

At the end of the day you are completely exhausted and starved. You drive home and concentrate on all the negative things that happened today, as well as all the things that you are craving to eat because you have not had anything all day.

Evening

You sit in front of the TV too long and invariably end up snacking for a few hours after dinner. You look at the clock and realize you should have been in bed ages ago and feel guilty about eating so much junk before bed.

In bed you're still feeling guilty and not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. You drift in and out of sleep all night and sense that you are snoring loudly from time to time.

As you wake up in the morning you roll over to look at the clock, and are amazed at how exhausted you feel.... here we go again.
