Gastric BypassA Step-by-Step Analysis of Weight Loss Surgery If you are contemplating gastric bypass type surgery it is often helpful to understand the events that will occur from your first visit to the follow up visits after the surgery. The following is a general outline of how most gastric bypass type surgery procedures occur, but be aware that each individual doctor or clinic will have their own specific protocols to follow. These steps apply to every type of weight loss surgery. Attend a Gastric Bypass Orientation Session If you are planning to have the procedure completed at a weight loss clinic you will be required to attend a session either individually or with other people. The procedure will be discussed as well as the steps involved and any associated risks. You will be able to ask questions and get the answers you need. Gastric Bypass Insurance If you have decided, in conjunction with the weight loss center, that this is the best procedure you should contact your insurance company to find out payment options and determine costs. After this is completed you are ready to see the doctor. First visit During the first visit with your bariatric surgeon and support team a complete medical history will be completed. It is important to make sure that the surgeon has experience and that they do bariatric surgical procedures as their main focus, not a minor focus in the office or clinic. In addition to just doing a medical history the doctor will: • Request blood work and tests This session usually lasts a full day, and will be very in depth and involved. Group meetings Most centers require you to attend group support meeting to ensure that you are on track and are following the guidelines of the nutritional screening. The group will continue to answer questions and prepare you for the physical and psycolocal changes that the WLS will bring about. Pre-Surgical appointments There will be ongoing pre-surgical visits to check on your progress. In addition be prepared for and EKG test to confirm your heart is in good condition prior to the surgery. Surgery You will usually have to be hospitalized at least one day prior to the surgery, but this may be optional. The surgery itself will last between one and three hours depending on the type of WLS and any issues that may arise. After surgery you will be required to stay in the hospital for one to four days to make sure there are no complications. Post-surgery meetings The eating patterns and lifestyle choices that will result from the WLS will require ongoing support. It is important to attend the post-surgery meetings to stay on track and to address any issues before they become problematic. Remember that this is a general outline and all clinics will have specific requirements. Make sure that you feel comfortable with your knowledge of the process before making a decision.
